I have the pleasure of working with several seniors at my day job. In case you are wondering my day job deals with digital marketing for a software company in the Cincinnati, OH area. A senior is classified as anyone who is 60 years or older. I know what you are thinking…..60 is the new 30 right? Seniors have a lot of value to bring to the workplace in more ways than one. Seniors are strategic and have years of experience to back up their thoughts on a business problem.
Here are a few of my favorite things about working with Seniors.
- Seniors are easy to manage. Now take what I say with a grain of salt as I realize not all seniors are created equal. Some may be easier to manage than others but for the most part in my experience in working with seniors they are typically dedicated to bringing value to the organization in which they work, and being an asset to the team as a whole.
- Seniors are honest. Seniors have been in the workforce for many years and they understand that most organizations value commitment and honesty when it comes to projects. This could be honesty surrounding project deadlines, strategic direction, or even their opinion on the implementation of a business idea. Seniors typically tell it how it is. It is important to acknowledge their experience and trust what they have to say.
- Seniors are more mature than their young counterparts.
Again my opinion on this subject may be a bit skewed as I am basing this blog post on my own personal experiences with seniors in the workplace. In my own experience seniors try to stay away from drama, are good at listening, and providing a unbiased view of the topic in discussion.
- Seniors are result driven. One saying that comes to my mind when thinking about my experience with seniors in the work place is that they put their money where their mouth is. Seniors are use to the way a corporate setting works. They are less afraid to fail than there younger counterparts. Seniors realize that in order to succeed most of the time the road is filled with failure.
My experience in working with seniors has been very positive over the course of my short career. I have found that seniors can be some of the most dedicated, loyal, and honest employees an organization can have on the team. I am very thankful for the knowledge that I have gained from being on a team of seniors within my organization.
